A Local’s Guide to David, Chiriqui: One day of the real Panama.

Hello there!

If you just have one day in our town, David, let me walk you through the highlights so you can make the most of your visit!

David, the capital of Chiriqui, is a picturesque and bustling city in western Panama. It is noted for its kind, friendly people and rich local culture.

Begin your day by strolling through the downtown district, which features tidy walkways lined with fruit vendors offering the freshest produce you can imagine. Chiriquí, Panama's most fertile province, produces high-quality and affordable fruit. Make sure to sample some local favorites such as pineapples and mangoes. There are also plenty of department stores and local restaurants. If you want to sample something real, order "sancocho" (our traditional chicken soup) or some "empanadas" packed with meat or cheese.

If you visit in March, don't miss the Feria Internacional de David. This is the greatest event of the year, attracting people from all around Latin America. While the fair focuses mostly on agriculture and trade, it also includes folkloric dancing, music, and traditional crafts. It's a fun approach to get to know the local culture.

For a change of scenery, take a short 30-minute drive southwest of the city to Playa Barqueta, a huge black (volcanic) sand beach ideal for a quiet afternoon. While the currents are strong and swimming is dangerous, it's still a nice place to go for a walk, watch the waves, or even surf if you're experienced. If you're not used to swimming in big waves, just keep an eye on the tides and stay close to the coast.

Taxis are readily available in David, making it simple to navigate. However, as a local advice, always negotiate the fare before entering. To avoid surprises, you know! However, if you want more flexibility, consider renting a car, especially if you intend to visit the beaches or neighboring mountains.

David may not have the glitzy attractions of larger cities, but that's part of its appeal. It's a real slice of Panamanian life where you may appreciate our simple way of living. So, whether you're here for a day or a few, relax, explore, and soak up the local atmosphere. You will not regret it! ✨
